ADVANCED ORTHODONTIC APPLIANCES AND MAXILLOFACIAL PROSTHESIS

 

PREAMBLE :
            With the advent of distraction Osteogenesis, Orthognathic surgeries and fixed functional appliances, there exists a need to train the existing dental technicians to fabricate these appliances as per the demand of orthodontist and maxillofacial surgeons. This course is designed to meet this demand and train the qualified technicians to perform these tasks.

OBJECTIVES :
            To train the dental technicians to fabricate advanced orthodontic and Orthognathic appliances as per the specifications of the specialist.

DURATION OF COURSE : 3 months (full time course)

ELIGIBILITY :
- B.D.S. degree recognized by DCI.
- M.D.S. degree recognized by DCI.
- Private Practioners with B. D.S. / M. D.S. degree.
- Dental technicians.

COURSE CONTENTS
THEORY :
Material science including bio materials, properties of biocompatibility and metallurgy
Heat cure and self cure acrylics.
Silicones.
Stainless steel.
Soldering and welding.
Metal allergy.
Impression pouring techniques and storing
Fundamentals of applied anatomy of maxillofacial region
Occlusion, permanent and deciduous dentition.
Alveolar arches.

  1. Introduction to specialized equipment.
  2. Model preparations.
  3. Appliance fabrication on standard models.
  4. Appliance fabrication on actual patient models.
  5. Fixed functional appliances.
      1. Jasper jumper.
      2. Herbst.
      3. Forsus.
      4. Head Gear.
      5. Hybrid Appliances.
      6. Face Bows.
      7. Hyrax.
      8. Orthognathic Splints.
      9. Distractors.
      10. Implant Positioning Jigs.

SCHEME OF EXAMINATION
Theory paper           100 Marks

  1. MCQ                          : 1 X 25 = 25 Marks
  2. Long Essays           : 2 X 10 = 20 Marks
  3. Short Essays           : 5 X 05 = 25 Marks
  4. Short Answers         : 10 X 3 = 30 Marks
