The Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry of KLE VK IDS was established in 1985, since the inception of the department, staff are engaged not only in  educating undergraduates in  Pedodontics but also the postgraduates in carrying out research activities. The child population forms about 40% of the population of our country.  Well planned and organized services will offer each child an opportunity to attain its maximum physical & mental growth, development and well being.

The department is actively involved in treatment of the special child  i.e. children who are mentally & Physically handicapped as well as those with Medically compromised condition.

 completed their M.D.S ( Master in Dental Surgery ) in Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry  with a passing percentage of 80%

        The faculty trains the Post Graduates with Conventional as well as advanced techniques in the field of Pediatric Dentistry  including the management of Dental problems of medically compromised children i.e., with cardiac, Respiratory, Renal & Immuno Compromised conditions.

 The Department is equipped with 3 MDS (2 female & 1 male) & 4 BDS (1 male & 3 female)  dedicated and committed staff members. We have one Professor, two lecturers and three junior lecturers. The staff are not only  involved in undergraduate and post graduate teaching programmes but are actively involved in patient health care as well as departmental upgradation activities. For the last 5 years from 2004 to 2008 the average UG and PG passing is 91.48 % and 80 % respectively. This clearly indicates the quality of education provided by the faculty of this department as well as their competency.

               Dr Indushekar was awarded the Star Pedodontist award in 2006 at the 28^th ISPPD conference, given to those Pedodontists who are also the head of institutions. He was consequently selected as the General Secretary of ISPPD for the second time in 2008. Dr. Suma Sogi was selected as the Treasurer of ISPPD for 2008-09.

The syllabus of the UG/ PG course was revised in the year 2006 when the KLE university was established and newer methods of internal assessment were incorporated with the introduction of MCQ’s.

teaching programmes. There is a strong academic, scientific as well as clinically based teaching programme for the UG’s / PG’s.    

              The department has implemented group learning in discussions and tutorials as best practices.

              As part of the faculty development programmes ,the faculty of this department are resource persons and chairpersons at various state as well as national level conferences. The faculty are guest speakers at various CDE programmes, conventions /conferences as well as  local organizations.

            Research and Publications have been in focus with 15 publications in various state (1)National (10) and International journals ( 3) . Presently there are two National level projects going on in the Department.

The ongoing projects in the Dept are :

1.Comprehensive Oral Health for the children of Maheshwari Blind School children..

3. Oral Health status of KLE School Children undergoing Incremental Dental health care Programme from 2006-2010.

4. Comprehensive Oral Health care for the children of the association of   Physically handicapped Nursery School, Shahapur.

5. School Health programs  at the S. S. School, Belgaum.

                 Besides the regular OPD’s , School Dental health programs / community based programmes  such as treatment for the blind children and physically handicapped children is also undertaken.

                The Department in the future is looking up to establish a conscious sedation unit as well as to establish  a section for  prenatal counseling of expectant mothers regarding the maintenance of oral hygiene in infants and toddlers.

Dr. Shikhar Kumar, Dr. Shweta Advani & Dr. Vanita More attended 6^th National PG Convention of ISPPD on 3^rd & 4^th July 2009 at Narayana Dental college & Hospital Nellore, A. P. India.

Workshop attended by PG’s:

Dr.Shikhar Kumar, and Dr. Shweta Advani Post Graduate students of the department are attended workshop on “ ISSUE & CHALLENGES IN PUBLIC HEALTH” on March 4^th & 5^th 2009 at K.LE. University, Belgaum.

Dr. Vinita More Post Graduate has participated in the workshop on “STERLIZATION & DISINFECTION TECHNIQUES IN HOSPITAL” on 9^th May 2009 organized by K.L.E. University  as Delegate.

Awards:

 On the Dentist day, the following staff members &  PG won the prizes for Poster presentation  held on 05 -03-02009 at K.L.E. VK. Institute of Dental Sciences Belgaum.

Post Graduate  - Dr. Shikhar Kumar, Dr. Shweta Advani, –Won the 2^nd Prize

 Dr. Shikhar Kumar  participated in a Post Graduate Debate on the topic “Rural Service should be made mandatory prior to admission for PG Medical / Dental Course” held on the 10^th of April 2009 and has  won the 2^nd prize on University Foundation Day 2009 at  K.L.E. University Belgaum.

 Dr. Shweta Advani  participated in a Post Graduate Debate on the topic “Rural Service should be made mandatory prior to admission for PG Medical / Dental Course” held on the 10^th of April 2009 and has  been  won the 1^st  prize on University Foundation Day 2009 at  K.L.E. University Belgaum.

 Dr. Vanita More participated in Essay Competition on topic “Dental Oral Hygiene among the Dental Health Professionals” and secured 1^st Prize for the same held at K.L.E. V.K. Institute of Dental Sciences Belgaum on 29^th July 2009.
